What does being a member of a cooperative require? Well...A cooperative needs to be formed by a group of people who decide how the cooperative will be run. So, the answer to this question is that it is up to us to decide. My preference is only that a member should be expected to do some actual work at the cooperative. This would be similar to the few hours per week that one is expected to do if one's child goes to a parent participation school. But there would have to be flexibility. We could not say that every member needs to be able to lift a 50-pound bag of rice. In most cases some minimum amount of work could be expected and that would provide some amount of credit for produce. But there would always be exceptions and all of these are up for discussion.
There are lots of possibilities.
Would this be a brick-and-mortar store or a virtual store? Yes.
This would be up for discussion. Some food coops are virtual and perhaps somewhat like a CSA. And some are traditional brick-and-mortar grocery stores. And there are blended variations as well.
Is this really doable?
I believe so. There must be an alternative to the soul-crushing over-corporatized stores that we have now. We need to find a way to get healthier food, not the ultra-processed food-like substances that we are sold now and that have unknown long-term effects on our bodies. We need to find some way to reduce the amount of pastic packaging that we use and the corporate grocery stores do not seem to be doing anything. We need more decent food at decent prices. Might we have to give up some artisinal foods shipped from thousands of miles away? Perhaps. But this is doable. And it is certainy not doable if we do not try.
